Background
Romans 8:14-17, 19-22 NKJV “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.”
The gift of salvation comes with the activation of the Holy Spirit, introducing to us the law of the Spirit of life. As we allow the Spirit of God to lead us and in our obedience towards His leadings, we prove that truly we are sons. In Romans 8, Paul gives a discourse on life in the Spirit, which brings an understanding of whom the true sons of God are. Let’s get into the word…
The Spirit and the Life of Sonship
Many believers have bought into the lie that merely accepting Jesus as your Lord and personal savior is all that is required. The purpose of salvation is for God to have mankind whom He created back unto himself, that is the anthem many sing. A man of God once asked his congregation, what did you receive when you gave your life to Christ? They gave answers such as eternal life, blessings, and more just as babies in the faith. Just like this congregation many still dwell on milk and cannot have meat(1Corinthians 3:1-2). The first question we need to ask ourselves is why were we saved and why did we need saving? In Paul’s discourse in Romans 8, creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Paul states two things hear, futility and the bondage of corruption, due to the bondage of corruption from the first Adam by whom the fall of man began, all creation was subjected to futility. In 1 Corinthians 15:45, the first Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening Spirit, referring to the saving grace found in Jesus. Now people understand that Jesus is the Son of God, but Jesus as the Son of God was declared with power, according to the Spirit of Holiness, by the resurrection from the dead (Romans 1:4). This shows the son made incarnate and born in the flesh is different from the Son by whom we have salvation through the sacrifice He made. Salvation is free but sonship comes with a price of sacrifice.
Once again the verse in discussion, for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Here Paul enlightens us the adoption of sonship we received through salvation and the cost, which is the suffering. The burden of sonship must be borne before the glory of the inheritance.
The power of Sonship
To become a son it takes obedience, as Paul refers as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. In Galatians 5:18, being led by the Spirit is not as result of living by law but by the promptings, quickening, indwelling and abiding by the Spirit of God. As Jesus said in John 3:5-8, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Showing us the life of the Spirit Jesus said: The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but cannot tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is everyone that is born of the Spirit. Here Jesus does not preach ignorance but in Ecclesiates 11:5 we do not know the ways of the spirit, nor how bones gron in the womb of a her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all. This goes forth to show our limitations in the flesh, but the dimensions of the Spirit are immeasurable. Also in Ezekiel 37 the Prophet was carried into a valley full of dry bones and was asked to prophesy, behold when he did as he was commanded the impossible was made possible. This is with emphasis that he did as commanded, how it was done was not for him to know, but for the Father of Spirits to bring into being. That is the life of the Spirit, obedience yields results.
So then who are sons? Sons are they that have conquered, they that take dominion over the flesh and live according to the will of God. Sons understand the burden of the Father, my food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to accomplish His work( John 4:34). Sons can take dominion and manifest in a dying world, when our obedience is complete(2Corinthians 10:6). Beloved as you read this, ask for the Holy Spirit to quicken you and to help you attain the level of sonship, that is able to pick up the signal of the Lord and to manifest , the world is awaiting, Sons Arise!
I shall arise as a son in my generation
