Deep calls unto deep

Background

Hebrew 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarded of those who diligently seek Him. Psalm 42:7 Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls; All Your waves and billows have gone over me. Job 32:8 But there is a Spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding.

The verses of study today give an understanding of our faith being the center of our walk with God and a deep craving in our souls that yearns for something our senses cannot satisfy. In the first verse above, patriarchs of the faith are commended on how their acts of sacrifice were out of their faith in God, in the second David shares a discourse calling on the rescue by the Lord, shedding light on the deep cravings of his soul and in Job 32 Elihu sheds light on the fountain of understanding, let’s get into the Word..

Faith in motion

Faith defined according to Hebrews 11:3 is the evidence of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Faith is not necessarily hoping, but evidence of things hoped for, meaning our belief system is founded and built on. Faith in a circular world is constantly exhibited through motivation of hope but faith is actually beyond hope, it is an affirmation of a good end irrespective of the beginning or the consequence. Faith in biblical terms is to showcase that the ways of God goes beyond our imagination, faith is knowing the limitations of man and allowing the limitless ways of God. Faith does not mean ignorance, but rather letting go of burdens you have no control over. The chapter further reads, therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them, who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. These go forth to show the results of faith, limitless abilities, and the rewards. Faith does not always mean a good end but satisfaction in knowing and understanding, what is, what should be and what should have been.

Faith to seek truth

According to Hebrews 11, these patriarchs all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say, such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had the opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. This reflects the origination of man beyond the surface of the earth. This is affirmed in Psalms 42:7 where David makes a statement reflecting a sincere inner thought in the words deep calls unto deep. David was a man sincere and in touch with his emotions and his incapacities as a man, he was sincere in his journey seeking God. He understood there is a dimension far beyond reality and he sought that wholeheartedly. This is confirmed in Job 32:8 where Elihu, who was the youngest amongst the peers of job but made a profound insight, with the understanding that there is a Spirit in man and it is only the breath of the Almighty that gives Him understanding. From the beginning of time when God created man, the bible says He breathed into him the breath of life and man became a living soul (Genesis 2:7) . As an example, see this as buying a product, a manufacturer knows all details about his invention or product and provides a manual for using it. Now we have faith in the manufacturer enough to consult the manual whenever we find ourselves lacking, why can’t we put our faith in the God who made us? Through God, we understand our complexities, our deepest desires and the purposes that bring us fulfillment. Due to our ignorance in turning to God, our world today is full of people attempting to live life at trial and error, leading to waste of time, resources and lack of legacy for generations to come.
